“Architects in the Global South – Profiles, Projects, Status” – Exhibition Opening at Berlin Global Village

We are participating! – humantektur in collaboration with Architects Without Borders is excited to be part of the Women In Architecture Festival 2025.

The WIA Festival 2025 is the first nationwide festival to highlight women in architecture, interior design, urban and open space planning, as well as building and engineering arts. Across Germany, 144 participants in a total of 264 projects will shed light on the presence of women in the construction and planning culture. We look forward to kicking off this colourful and diverse festival with you and to celebrate together at our regional opening.

Our contribution will present female architects from the Global South and their diverse perspectives, visions, and projects at the Berlin Global Village in Neukölln. It will highlight the situation of women in the construction industry in the Global South, pointing out the challenges women face in the industry, as well as successful ways they have found to establish themselves in the profession. Through posters and statements, their work and voices will be emphasized and presented to the public. In our long-standing work in partnership-based construction consulting and support in development cooperation and disaster relief in the Global South, the teams from humantektur and Architects Without Borders collaborate with local partners, architectural firms, and construction service providers in over 70 different countries. It is striking that women are rarely represented in architecture offices, as construction managers, or as craftswomen. The number of women involved can be counted on two hands, despite the large number of projects we have supported.

We evaluated our project experience through interviews with selected female architects from 15 different countries, from Argentina to Malawi and Tanzania. The interview results will be presented in the form of posters and video statements in an exhibition at Berlin Global Village from June 19th 2025, to June 29th 2025, with an opening on June 19th 2025, and an online dialogue forum. The latter will take place within the framework of the NaBEK network (Sustainable Building in Development Cooperation and Disaster Relief), run by humantektur and Architects Without Borders. This will provide an opportunity for direct dialogue with selected female architects.

The exhibition will be held in the café and foyer of Berlin Global Village, located in the lively and diverse district of Neukölln in Berlin (Berlin Global Village, Am Sudhaus 2, 12053 Berlin). Around 50 migrant, diaspora, and development policy organizations and initiatives working on global justice, sustainability, and diversity are based there.
