The three-part series of events included lectures, discussions and workshops. Together with the participants, we addressed the question of how to cooperate successfully in international cooperation and how to build sustainably with the clever use of resources. The target group was primarily non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that deal directly or indirectly with construction tasks in developing and crisis regions, but also interested experts.

The opening event for NaBEK was a complete success: with a total of 37 participants (26 participants from NGOs and ROs as well as the speakers and hosts from Architekten über Grenzen e.V. and humantektur), it was very well attended and a positive foundation was laid for cooperation on content and the exchange of knowledge.
Eike Roswag-Klinge (an architect based in Berlin) and Bärbel Schwaiger from the GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) gave an impressive overview of the wide range of development cooperation – from ambitious pioneers driven by personal concerns to large state-owned, globally active sponsors of numerous development programs and diverse project work.

In the second event, the topics identified in the course of the preliminary survey and the first event were explored in greater depth over two days, both through presentations and moderated workshops. The participants were able to discuss their work and the basis for further cooperation was developed.

The third event focused on the exchange between various experts and organizations and, in addition to two inputs by Olivier Moles (CRAterre) and Michael Grausam (humantektur), offered plenty of space for the presentation and discussion of projects. In addition, perspectives for learning and knowledge exchange within and between organizations on sustainable construction in development cooperation and disaster relief were outlined.

The results and experiences of the series are currently being processed into a publication, which will also be available online shortly.
In the workshop phases, existing knowledge from practice was to be collected, individual experiences jointly reflected on and new content generated. Success factors for sustainable (re)construction projects were identified and recommendations for action were formulated. The content conveyed and developed is currently being processed and will soon be published for the public. Beyond the project, information needs were identified and further competence building and cooperation projects are to be initiated.
The series took place as part of the Program for the Promotion of Development Policy Qualification Measures (PFQ) funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and managed by Engagement Global. The implementing organizations are Architekten über Grenzen e.V. in cooperation with humantektur.
