Across Germany, 144 participants in a total of 264 projects will shed light on the presence of women in the construction and planning culture. We look forward to kicking off this colourful and diverse festival with you and to celebrate together at our regional opening.

Our contribution will present female architects from the Global South and their diverse perspectives, visions, and projects at the Berlin Global Village in Neukölln. It will highlight the situation of women in the construction industry in the Global South, pointing out the challenges women face in the industry, as well as successful ways they have found to establish themselves in the profession. Through posters and statements, their work and voices will be emphasized and presented to the public. In our long-standing work in partnership-based construction consulting and support in development cooperation and disaster relief in the Global South, the teams from humantektur and Architects Without Borders collaborate with local partners, architectural firms, and construction service providers in over 70 different countries. It is striking that women are rarely represented in architecture offices, as construction managers, or as craftswomen. The number of women involved can be counted on two hands, despite the large number of projects we have supported.

We evaluated our project experience through interviews with selected female architects from 15 different countries, from Argentina to Malawi and Tanzania. The interview results will be presented in the form of posters and video statements in an exhibition at Berlin Global Village from June 19th 2025, to June 29th 2025, with an opening on June 19th 2025, and an online dialogue forum. The latter will take place within the framework of the NaBEK network (Sustainable Building in Development Cooperation and Disaster Relief), run by humantektur and Architects Without Borders. This will provide an opportunity for direct dialogue with selected female architects.

The exhibition will be held in the café and foyer of Berlin Global Village, located in the lively and diverse district of Neukölln in Berlin (Berlin Global Village, Am Sudhaus 2, 12053 Berlin). Around 50 migrant, diaspora, and development policy organizations and initiatives working on global justice, sustainability, and diversity are based there.

Vernissage at Berlin Global Village – WIA Opening on June 19th 2025

Moderator: Nina Haase-Trobridge, Chief Political Correspondent at Deutsche Welle

18:00 The exhibition space in the foyer and meeting café (ground floor) will open and be accessible to registered guests.
18:30 Welcome, introduction to the WIA initiative, and presentation of the regional WIA program by the WIA team.
19:00 Official opening of the exhibition with a welcome and project introduction by the teams of humantektur and Architects Without Borders,
followed by a brief expert lecture by South African urban researcher Professor Dr. Lindsay Howe (University of Liechtenstein / Technical University of Munich) on the topic “Designing Diversity”.
Brief lectures / panel discussion by interview participants from the Global South on the situation of women in the construction industry in their countries.
20:30 Musical contribution: feminist, international music by the Berlin a cappella group “Ecoro” and others.
21:00 Open access to the exhibition, networking among WIA actors with music and drinks.
22:00 End of the event.

Public event, registration required.

This event is already fully booked.

However, if you want you can come by onthe day of the event to view the exhibition or ring the bell at “BGV Events” during the Berlin Global Village’s general open hours from June 19th until June 29th to enter the exhibition. We are very pleased about your interest![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Directions/Location
The premises are well connected to public transport (near U 8 Boddinstraße / U 7 Rathaus Neukölln).
